A simple guide

Know your ranges

If the two numbers fall in different ranges, use the higher range. One reading alone does not confirm a diagnosis—share a pattern of readings with your clinician.

Low

Below 90 or below 60

Normal

Below 120 and below 80

Elevated

120–129 and below 80

High: Stage 1

High: Stage 2

When to get emergency help

If your reading is higher than 180/120 and you have chest pain, shortness of breath, weakness, numbness, vision changes, difficulty speaking, or another new and worrying symptom, call your local emergency number now.
